Milsons Point is located near the northern end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and is home to such icons as Luna Park and the North Sydney Olympic Pool.
In 1806 James Milson was granted land in the area shortly after arriving to the colony from England. Milson built a cottage which he named ‘Milk House’ and set up a dairy cattle farm. He made a living by supplying anchored ships in the harbour with milk and beef.
The first access to the city provided by watermen, paddlesteamers and ferries and later in 1886 the first cable tramway was opened from Milsons Point to St Leonards Park in North Sydney. The first ferry service from the city to Milsons Point was run by harbour waterman, Billy Blue from 1817-1834. Billy Blue was a convict that was sent to the Colonies after stealing sugar.
Today access to the city is easy, with trains and ferries running to a regular timetable. Not to mention the pleasant walk across the Harbour Bridge.
Luna Park – with its’ big smiling face to welcome you – was first opened in 1935 and has provided hours of fun for families, teenagers and WWII sailors hoping to find a nice girl. With rides, sideshow alley style games and now a major entertainment venue, it’s still a popular place for weekend fun.
Just next to Luna Park is the North Sydney Olympic Pool. Overlooking Sydney Harbour, it was opened in 1936. In all, 86 world records have been set there by the likes of Shane Gould and Dawn Fraser. Today the pool is still in use and is part of a gymnasium complex.
