STATISTICS

  • Population of Mosman: 26000
  • Area: 8.7 sq.km
  • Growth Rate: 1.6%
  • Mosman is a local suburb, part of the Lower North Shore of Sydney. Located only 8km from Sydney CBD. It is a prosperous quiet leafy suburb surrounded by 3 sides of water making it an attractive place to live.
  • Long before European settlers arrived, Aborigines occupied the Australian continent for as long as 40,000 years. Mosman had an Aboriginal tribe known as the Borogegal tribe. Bungaree (c1775-1830) was the leader of this tribe and the most well known Aborigine in Mosman’s history. Most of Bungarees' tribe died of smallpox. At age 26 he joined the British explorers on voyages to the far north as well as circumnavigating Australia with Matthew Flinders.
  • Being leader of his tribe, he was given land at Georges Head. Bungaree welcomed newcomers as their ships entered Sydney Harbour, and made friends with Russian explorers. The French also became acquaintances of Bungaree. He spent most of his life the traditional Aboriginal way, hunting and fishing and providing for his family. Throughout his whole life he was respected amongst his own people as well as the new settlers from Europe. He was known to have been the first Aboriginal to be called an "Australian".
  • The flagship for the First Fleet was HMS Sirius. It was careened at Mosman Bay also known as Great Sirius Cove in 1789. Mosman Bay was chosen because it was best described as “a convenient retired cove on the north shore". Mosman has been known for its maritime and defence installations as early as 1801. Thomas O'Neil cultivated land at Balmoral between 1811-1813. Captain John Edwards settled in the area c1823. Not long after a ferryboat was plied across Middle Harbour by Barney Kearns.
  • The whaling industry was brought to Chowder Bay by the late 1820's, it was also used as an anchorage for American whalers. Grants of land at Mosman Bay were allocated to Archibald Mosman and John Bell in 1831 to establish a whaling station. The whaling industry was good to Archibald Mosman, who then sold his business at its peak and moved to Glenn Innes. By the 1840's the whaling industry was declining and Mosman Bay was then used to overhaul ships.
  • With Mosman's rugged terrain, very little settlement occurred even though other land grants were taken up. Access from North Sydney to Middle Head was only possible by foot track in the 1840's. It wasn't until 1860, that the first proper road was constructed in Mosman being Avenue Road, this ran from Mosman Bay to Mosman Junction.Bradleys Head, Middle Head and Military Roads were all constructed 10 years later. Oswald Bloxsome was an early resident who built a mansion on 40 acres overlooking Mosman Bay which he named "The Rangers" in 1844.
  • Other major influential people of Mosman, were Richard Hayes Harnett Senior and his son Richard Harnett Junior. In 1859 Harnett Senior began purchasing the 108 acres from Archibald Mosman. Harnett Senior was responsible over the next 30 years for the construction of many roads, a horse drawn bus and ferry services linking Mosman to the city. Due to this infrastructure, picnic resorts and pleasure grounds began to spring up around the foreshore to cater for visitors to the area. By 1878 a sandstone quarry was established by Harnett at Mosman Bay which produced quality sandstone for historic buildings throughout Australia. The 1880's and 1890's saw Mosman Public School open as well as the Congregational Church. Postal and telegraph services began as did the supply of water. It wasn't until 1893 that the electric tram service started. By 1893 Mosman became a new and separate municipality with 1,600 residents. The boundaries of Mosman that were set in 1893 still remain unaltered today. The first mayor elected for the Mosman area was Richard Harnett Junior.
  • Construction of shops and federation style homes intensified in Mosman at the turn of the century. The population increased and people were attracted to it because of its panoramic vistas and natural bushland setting as well as the water surrounds. Residents maintained the social character of Mosman. Developments that undermine the nature of Mosman were strongly rejected by council policies.
  • In 1915 electricity cables were extended to service Mosman. In 1916 the famous Taronga Park Zoo was opened, and a bridge was built at The Spit to replace the steam punt in 1925. During the war years and the depression, the private building sector had slowed down but the public works sector was still going. This is when the Balmoral Promenade and the Band Rotunda were constructed.
  • Numerous flat developments were occurring in the late 1950's and 1960's due to the ever increasing population and shortage of housing throughout Sydney. By the end of the 1960's council introduced strict guidelines for developments, and this is when high-rise development was banned in 1973. Today council continues to maintain the natural elements of the environment which has attracted people to Mosman for the past 200 years.
